Playing music with Ronan has always felt natural. Working together over a period of about ten years in various bands, productions and on several projects, has developed our musical telepathy and strengthened our collaborative abilities in experimenting with spontaneous composition. Creatively, our musicianship, sonic textures and mutual reactive decisions, when making improvised music, have always been something I enjoy immensely. This intuitive, natural interaction, be it a subconscious or metaphysical influence from the 'other', or from our surrounding acoustic ecology and personal artistic paths, is central to the allegorical and metaphorical soundscapes created on this recording. Entitled Forgery - in homage to the Kalk Bay ceramics studio The Forge, where we performed and recorded this project - this live album originated as a response to and was also a means of branching out from my concurrent masters dissertation, Aspects of Landscape Music. Recorded over two performances (in 2011 and 2012), Forgery is a manifestation of our musical friendship and an exciting beginning of further musical exploration where music and art coalesce.

Tapping into music is always a unique experience, one which is as enlivening as watching recurring patterns in nature, such as the sunset or moonrise, but each time experiencing a different mood, texture, colour and sound. Frequencies in a bowl of water, a breath or even a thought, have a musicality about them just as in the density or subtlety of a note or anything that resonates. These frequencies are as much the musicians as they are the music. Improvising with music, such as with Forgery, is a process that is as natural as that which surrounds it, and depends completely on all these musicians' to determine its outcome and ultimately how listeners are affected by it. With Max Starcke this interplay becomes an exciting and fascinating collaboration in which our theoretical knowledge, long-standing friendship and trust in each other and in whatever flows through us, is brought to the creative process. If a positive intention is established, there's little chance of a contrived sound. When the music starts playing the 'musicians', and the 'musicians' are listening to one another, the music follows a natural course. On this recording we've been able to capture a moment in time that gives the listener a glimpse of how delicate, chaotic, massive and tiny nature seems to be.
