To Begin At The Beginning: A Short Story of Being a Music Buyer.

Once upon a time, before the internet, there were little record shops dotted throughout the world in towns and cities both large and small. Working in many of these little shops were people who both cared about music and knew about music, and if asked (and sometimes without being asked!) they would give you good advice about what you might like. Owing to a lack of space in their shop, they would become more selective about what the record and CD bins were filled with, and often, this would reflect their own taste just as much as commercial potential.

Then the internet arrived, and music listeners quickly realised that they could get just about anything they wanted there, without facing bad weather or having to wait for very long for their order to appear. Obviously, this was great for the listener who knew exactly what he wanted, but for the novice - or "noob" as we call them these days - this was a situation that would soon become far from ideal.

Just like the giant chainstores that the little record stores struggled against, the webstores grew and grew, branching out into different markets, selling just about anything that could be shipped cheaply and with ease. Suddenly, you were being recommended a toaster or a blouse or a screwdriver set because someone who had bought that obscure Eric Dolphy CD has also bought these things. And the music that was recommended was often irrelevant, because the same shopper had bought some CDs as presents for the kids: how many Eric Dolphy fans are as passionate about the Pussycat Dolls, one wonders?

NOW: Gubemusic

Gubemusic was born out of a desire to recapture the spirit of those small stores. Gubemusic is all about good music, and with that comes knowledge of the music we keep stocked on our virtual shelves, and the ability and desire to recommend good music that you will like. So while you will probably be able to find the music that you already love, you will also have the possibility to discover music you had previously not considered, or maybe even heard of.
