Accoustic Landscapes

Acoustic Landscapes is the new label that specializes in capturing exciting musicians in inspiring moments and places in Europe. The label will begin it's activity in Norway this fall, launching two releases that both are highly original. Inspired from a festival in Italy called "Paesaggi Acustici" the label will also launch it's own festival for acoustic & improvised music in Norway in the summer of 2012 with the name "Acoustic Landscapes", creating a kind of artistic bond between Norway and Italy, presenting some of the great european artists that made "Paesaggi Acustici" a great success in Italy. With a combined twin-festival in Norway in July and August each year this will serve as a great provider of high level artistic performances in an intimate meeting with an audience hopefully enthusiastic and curious about our acoustic musical adventures.

Tape to Zero is a completely new concert series with a focus on contemporary jazz, electronica and ambient music. We’ll be presenting electronic and acoustic projects from a range of different musicians. The main idea is to present both familiar and unfamiliar faces on the same stage, with fresh projects and a unique musical expression. The music includes the experimental and the challenging, as well as more accessible and melodic works. There’s something for everyone and anyone who has an open ear.

The concert series is arranged by Kjetil Husebø and Terje Evensen.

Celebrating 24Bit Sound!

Just taking a moment to celebrate the amazing quality of 24bitsound. Did a small workshop yesterday at HiFi Klubben and we all were stunned experiencing the sound difference between mp3sound and 24Bit. It is another world! Also wonderful seeing media players and HiFi producers moving into the the new digital world. After downloading music from Gube, adding them to my Songbird Software (getsongbird.com), connecting my powerbook USB into the superb Lyngdorf Soundsystem and it worked immediately! Exactly the Plug and Play we need to take advantage of the new brave world of downolading soundfiles with no limitations qualitywise!

Slowly I am getting more and more enthusiastic about the releases on Norway's Hubro. Always from the world of improvised music, but then always with a nice angle. (...)One has the impression of listening to a record of percussion sounds plus a lot of other things and not just a percussion record. The bows and electronics add nice small melodic interjections to the music. These seven pieces show an interesting variety in approaches. 'Funeral' is like an ambient piece, 'Piratmen' starts out ethnic but becomes ambient also, while the closing 'Germany' is an excellent Krautrock stampede (hence the title I'd say), including what seems a theremin, although none is listed. In other pieces he is more traditionally improvised or leans towards modern composition. A great CD, not too long, not too short. Spot on.

Plastic Strip Press is proud to present this 2-CD digipack release containing the two classic Norwegian post-punk albums En sang for åtte kroner... (1985) and Blått (1987) by the group The BESTE. The band consisted of members from bands such as The Aller Værste!, DumDum Boys and Holy Toy and released only two private pressed LPs in their shortspanned career. The sound is remastered and the 16-page booklet comes with unseen photos and linernotes by Ola Bauer and Audun Vinger. Executive produced by Lars Mørch Finborud & Sverre Knudsen.

The Orchestral Works of Finn Mortensen

Terje Mikkelsen undoubtedly has a certain sense for bringing great, unknown music to his listeners. He was the first to record Grieg' symphony, and has recently released premiere recordings by composers including Svendsen, Halvorsen, Alnæs and Tellefsen. As the second recording in a close co-operation together with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Mikkelsen is releasing the highly rewarding and rich orchestral works of Finn Mortensen.

Oslo’s magic music maker Todd Terje has already gained a wunderkind like reputation for his gentle yet potent productions (we won’t mention the “E” word here) on labels like Full Pupp, Permanent Vacation or Running Back on top of being one of the best remixers money can buy (Shit Robot, Bryan Ferry, Dølle Jølle et cetera et cetera). What is there left for him to do? Establish a label of his own! “It’s The Arps” is the starting signal for Olsen. And what a splendid one it is. Created from scratch and solely on the mythical synthesizer ARP 2600 (check
www.letsnerd.com for help), it features four tracks (reads instant classics) that couldn’t be a better follow-up to his 2011 super hit EP “Ragysh”. Towering over the assortment is the laser crime scene called “Inspector Norse”. Defying genres and blinkers, this is finest goose bumps dance music that makes you whistle along, laughing and crying all at the same time – but the rest isn’t half bad either. The short, but sweet “Myggsommer” gives away Terje’s secret love for quirky exotika, whereas “Swing Star Pt 1” and its brother have a (balearic) brilliance and witchery to them that is rarely found nowadays. Powered by Smalltown Supersound and housed in a beautiful sleeve courtesy of Bendik Kaltenborn (www.benkalt.no). 100% Arp 2600 and 200% Todd Terje!”

I love jazz! Growing up, listening to my father's records I have, since the age of 8, been playing and trying to learn this music. Firstly, on our old home piano; later, pretending to be Jimmy Smith on my Yamaha Electone Organ (including the silliest electronic rhythmbox ever created). Later, using Fender Rhodes and Synth, and, finally, in my daily rehearsals on the piano I was able to buy at the age of 22.

So why did I never perform this music in concert?

Well... There have been so many interpretations of these beautiful songs. Fantastic versions by fantastic performers. Bill Evans, Errol Garner, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Keith Jarrett - to just name a genius or two. Likewise, there have been some horrible, destructive versions, showing off skills in a meaningless, obscure, imaginary competition.

After all those years spending daily hours playing with and around this fantastic song material, I finally felt my versions were personal enough to be recorded, with respect, appreciation and gratitude for those wonderfully beautiful songs!
